Rufford Abbey was founded in the 12th Century as a Cistercian monastery. After the dissolution of the monastries by Henry VIII in 1536, Rufford became the country house of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury. In 1626 the estate passed into the possession of the Savile family who developed the house and grounds further. In 1938 the house was closed and fell into disrepair. Nottinghamshire County Council then aquired the property and demolished the derelict parts and refurbished the Jacobean Wing. English Heritage now oversee the upkeep of the property.

Rufford Park is open to the public every day between 10:30 and 17:00 (10:30 and 16:00 Jan &Feb). Telephone enquiries to 01623 822944.
